Let me just start off by saying that I’m European, meaning that I have never gotten the habit of washing my hair on a daily basis. To me washing your hair every single day is ludacris and would be a nightmare. My hair is long, got lots of it and washing it is a mission, let’s not even get into the drying and styling process. So although it is all getting better since my hair has come back to life, there is no way in hell I’m doing this everyday or even every other day. I wash my hair every 4 to 5 days and since it is fairly dry given all the abuse and highlights gone wrong over the years, my hair doesn’t get greasy whatsoever and if it feels it needs a little freshen up, I spray dry shampoo and it is all well in fairy land.

So as you might have guessed, my first advice for healthy hair is not to wash your hair as often.

Wash your hair every few days

Now mind you that if you have short hair you might need to wash it every 3 days, but my general advice for long hair girls, especially if your hair is damaged, is to wash it every 4 days.

And who has time to wash, blow dry, style and all, everyday anyway???

Use sulfate free shampoos and conditioners

I recently switched to a sulfate free shampoo and it made a really big difference in how my hair air dries afterwards.

My hair usually look like witch hair if I don’t style it and I am so pleasantly surprised and excited to announce that the last couple times I washed my hair, it didn’t dry all frizzy and crazy. Je like.

I have been using Color Keratin by Tresemme as a shampoo and Elvive Arginin Resist by L’Oreal as a conditioner. I wanted to get both shampoo and conditioner from the same line but I always get the same issue with having “methylisothiazolinone” (a preservative I am highly allergic to, more info on this nasty here) in the shampoo or conditioner of the same line, so I have to split lines and be grateful I’m even finding one of each methylisothiazolinone free when I’m traveling…

Use coconut oil as a pre-shampoo mask

Olive oil works also really well. Apply the oil on your hair and scalp for at least an hour prior to washing it, tie it in a bun and go along with whatever you gotta to do before showering. It’s going to nourish and protect the hair so the hair doesn’t get strip off of its natural moisture when getting washed. Love it. (Using sulfate free shampoo already helps in doing not stripping the hair from its natural protection by the way).

Brush your hair

At least once a day, tilt your head forward and use a bamboo brush. The wood will distribute healthy oils onto the strands, keeping the hair nourished, and having your head tilted forward will bring the blood flow to feed those hair follicules that need to get all the nutrients possible.

Having detangled hair is key to keeping it healthy.
