Marilicious Approved: Hemp Seed Oil

Facial Oil for Acne Prone Skin

Facial oils are amazing to moisturize acne prone skins as their molecular structure resembles the one of sebum which is the skin’s natural oil. When the skin produces too much sebum, pores get clogged which creates pimples and skin ends up oily and shiny. When you add oil to an oily skin, the skin doesn’t need to produce excess sebum anymore which helps the skin to regulate itself and balance sebum production.

Now, the million dollar question is: which facial oil to choose? Here you can find the comedogenic rating for most facial oils, because, unfortunately, all oils aren’t created equal and some oils such as coconut oil or wheat germ oil can make you breakout.

For an acne prone skin the best oils are: argan, safflower and hemp seed oils which all have a comedogenic rating of zero.

Today, we are focusing on hemp seed oil.

What is hemp seed oil?

  • Hemp seed oil is made of pressed hemp seeds. Hemp is a variety of cannabis. Do not worry it is free of THC, the psychoactive substance active in cannabis. You won’t get stoned using hemp seed oil. Fortunately… or not.
  • Hemp seed oil is very rich in omega 3 and 6. It is actually made of essential fatty acids for 80%. That is great to counteract aging effects, boost immunity and reduce inflammation. Acne being an inflammatory disease, facial oils such as hemp seed oil that are packed with essential fatty acids are very helpful in soothing and healing acne prone skins.
  • It is rich as well in vitamin E (which is a great antioxidant, more info on how antioxidants benefit the skin here)
  • It has a nutty flavor and is actually very good as a dressing for salads, especially with endives / apples / walnuts.

How to use it?

  • At night as your moisturizer, on top of your night serum if you use one.

For which skin type?

  • All skin types can use it but it is particularly adapted to oily and acne prone skins for all of the above reasons.

Warnings:

  • Hemp seed oil must be kept in the fridge as it goes rancid quite fast. So buy small bottles at a time to keep using an oil that is always at its best quality. And buy organic of course, unrefined and cold pressed.
  • Apply in small quantities and don’t go to bed directly after applying it on your face as your sheets will not forgive you. Let some time for your skin to absorb it. I stained mu sheets, over and over… Now I use argan oil and keep hemp seed oil for my salads…!

Where to buy it?

  • Your organic local store

Thank you for stopping by! I hope this was helpful.
